The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India is offering e-Learning courses on Disaster Risk Management in collaboration with Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), The World Bank, Washington.

The aim of the e-Learning Programme is to raise the level of awareness and preparedness as well as to enhance analytical skills and professional competencies of key stakeholders in different areas of Disaster Risk Management and Mitigation. The courses are designed specifically to build competencies of disaster management professionals, development practitioners and general public in India and SAARC countries. Unlike classroom based pedagogy, there is no examination system in the NIDM’s web based courses. Our Course Participant Says...

Mr. Raju Narayan Swamy
IAS; (Secretary to the Govt. of Kerala)

Online NIDM courses remind me of the famous dictum regarding 'Education', Education does not begin with the learning of the alphabet. It begins with a mother's look, a father's node of approbation, a sister's gentle pressure of the hand, a brother's noble act of forbearance.” Having completed one online course and quarter way through the present course on risk sensitive land use planning, I am of the opinion that the courses are extremely useful. The presentations are treasure-troves of knowledge, the discussion forum is brimming with activity and the assignment and end of course project are real testing grounds of the level of skill earned. The courses, no doubt, ring an alarm bell. They highlight persistent and self defeating neglect of the disaster mitigation issues in planning disclosure and action in spite of the overwhelming intensity of the problems that they represent. They highlight the need to move from rhetoric to action. I have no option but to reframe the famous lines below to give you a bird's eye view of NIDM courses:

“In some faint dawn
In some dim eve
Like a gesture of light
Like a dream of delight…..”

Hats off to the NIDM team.

Squadron leader PN Subramaniam
Deputy Director (Indian Air Force), New Delhi

I am an Armed Forces Officer serving in the Indian Air Force for the last one decade. I have been involved in the Disaster Management activity more than a couple of times. I came to know about the Online Course on Comprehensive Natural Disaster Risk Management Framework through the print media.

The course content available online in the website gave me the flexibility to access the study material wherever I traveled. The Discussion Forum also gave me an opportunity to broaden my learning aptly assisted by the facilitators review regularly, who kept encouraging us to broaden our horizon through active participation. The helpful attitude of the Programme Manager, Task Manager and the Facilitators deserve a certain mention. Thank you NIDM – WBI to provide me a hassle free environment to understand and learn the DM concepts in a very meaningful manner.

Ramesh Babu Therala
Ex- Serviceman

Excellent effort by NIDM! I am an ex-serviceman. After release on completion of initial engagement, I was into operations. But my passion has changed from Operations to Capacity development and especially on Disasters after undergoing the first online CDRMF Course. Earlier my impression of online courses was poor when I was of the impression that the learning / gaining knowledge would be limited, but surprisingly my impression is overturned. The planning of the course, its approach (beginning assignment, country profile, weekly discussions, end of course assignments), and material of course and guidance by experienced faculties are really of immense value. Knowledge gained from discussion forum postings of co-participants has been massive.

The course structure is nicely drafted that helped me in familiarizing with contemporary concepts and prevailing practices in disaster management. It enabled me to understand various facets of disaster management and associated challenges faced while coping with disaster.

Its ease of access is boon for all, specially working professionals who cannot adhere to strict classroom regime. Simple interactive interface with ample video tutorials are quite helpful. The exhaustive list of references and case studies from across the globe helped in broadening my perspective. Presentations and literature is comprehensive in itself.

Periodic monitoring and valuable feedback from subject matter specialist helped me stay aligned towards this course. Program team is highly supportive and has guided me through getting the core concepts of the module.

Discussion forums have really enabled me to exchange my thoughts with participants from across the world from different disciplines. It is truly a wonderful learning experience.

It is indeed a great privilege to have been a successful participant of many e- learning courses conducted by NIDM. In addition, I was also one amongst the privileged participant to have been a facilitator of the Basic course . I would like to place my sincere gratitude for the opportunity given by NIDM. Courses are really of immense help, especially for those working professionals who can’t attend the regular classes due to their professional commitments. The e-platform provides ample opportunities to all aspirants across the world to access courses of their interest. The courses have been a guiding light to Government Official like me for understanding the basics initially and then progress further to learn the specialized aspects of Disaster Management. I could put to use the knowledge gained, during the disaster of Cloud Burst in Leh.

The Course Team of NIDM is highly focused and demonstrative in imparting knowledge to participants. They are interactive, willing and effective in ensuring that the participants are benefitted during the course. The curriculum of basic and advance courses is comprehensive, well integrated, educative and all encompassing. They syllabus is designed meet the essential requirements of participants. I would like to express my gratitude to NIDM for offering the comprehensive basic course and specialized course on disaster risk management. The basic course introduced disaster risk frame work, explained the role of actors and detailed the national disaster management systems in different countries. The group discussion through postings in the group forum enhanced the understanding of the subject in more detail. Even though I was busy in my job related tasks, I spent 2 – 3 hours a day for studying and understanding the PowerPoint presentations and the case studies. The exhaustive case studies and the reading materials given for the study tested my own capacity to read and digest the information. The guidance given for submitting the assignment was very informative and guided me to focus on things that need to be understood and applied well in the assignment. The proof of improvement of my knowledge in the subject came in the form of appreciation from the Emergency preparedness working group formed by UN OCHA in which I was invited to be as one of the members to draft the country Standard operating procedure for Emergency operation after the disaster. Using these course materials I trained our community trainers who are training the community development councils (CDC) in villages of Afghanistan. Thanks NIDM!!!

Thank you Course team and all the facilitators and coordinators for organizing such a wonderful online training course. I could attend it only because it was online.

Neha Pandey
Public Health Expert

I would like to thank NIDM and GFDRR (The World Bank) for providing this opportunity amidst the pandemic. This course will prepare everyone for the upcoming disasters. Many of us are not that prepared now that the pandemic is on the go, but taking this course will help us be more prepared for future disasters. It has been a truly invaluable learning experience for me. The topics covered in this course, supported by data and supplementary resources, make it easy to contextualize real world issues in real time. It reinforced my knowledge on the subject. This course is no less than very useful and applicable as an adaptive measure to protect lives and minimize damage in the event of a disaster. Credit for this definitely goes to the wonderful team of NIDM for their constant support, feedback and input.

Happy learning!!
